Who needs movie tickets when you have a 98-incher at home?

Sony wants to bring cinema to your home with its new 98-inch BRAVIA Mini-LED TV

Sony is quite literally going big in India. It has officially entered the country’s expanding market for super large-screen televisions with the launch of its 98-inch BRAVIA 5 Mini-LED TV. It’s a size clearly aimed at enthusiasts looking to replicate the theatre experience without a projector.

Premium features for a massive screen

One of the standout features of this colossal display is the built-in Cognitive Processor XR. It’s an AI-enhanced chip that Sony says “adjusts detail, color, and motion to mirror human perception”.

This processor works alongside the TV’s key panel technology – Mini-LED. Sony’s version, dubbed the XR Backlight Master Drive, uses a dense array of tiny LEDs and a local dimming algorithm to achieve high contrast. In theory, this should deliver the deep blacks and brilliant highlights that make HDR content pop. Complementing all this is support for both Dolby Vision for HDR and Dolby Atmos.

Sony is also pushing its content ecosystem hard with this release. The TV features several “Studio Calibrated Modes,” including a new one for Prime Video, which joins existing modes for Netflix and Sony’s own Sony Pictures Core service.

These modes automatically adjust picture settings to, as Sony puts it, present content exactly as the creators envisioned. The Pictures Core app itself offers a library of movies available to stream at what the company claims is near 4K Blu-ray quality.

While a 98-inch TV is an impressive piece of hardware, Sony isn’t the first to tap into the Indian consumer’s growing appetite for massive screens. Competitors like TCL and Samsung have been offering similarly sized panels for some time, often at aggressive price points. But Sony’s entry signals that the premium end of this segment is heating up.

Sony has priced the BRAVIA 5 at Rs 6,49,990 in India, and it’s available to purchase as of this week. You can pick one up from Sony retail stores, its online portal, and other major electronics retailers in India.

Several launch promotions are available too. These include a three-year comprehensive warranty, a cashback offer of Rs 25,000 on select credit cards, and a special monthly payment plan of Rs 19,995.
