Spotify Premium just got pricier, here’s what you’ll pay now

If Spotify is part of your daily rhythm, whether it’s powering your commute playlists, lo-fi work sessions, or weekend house parties, here’s something you’ll want to note. Spotify has quietly bumped up the prices of all its Premium plans in India. This marks the first hike since the platform launched here in 2019.

The update is part of a broader global move rolling out across South Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America starting September. But in India, the new prices are already live.

Here are the revised monthly plans for Spotify Premium:

– Individual: Rs 139 (was Rs 119)
– Duo: Rs 179 (was Rs 149)
– Student: Rs 69 (was Rs 59)
– Family: Rs 229 (was Rs 179)

The Family plan sees the steepest hike with a 28 per cent jump. A Spotify spokesperson told Moneycontrol that the new rates apply immediately for new users, while existing subscribers will be notified over email in the coming weeks.

Why the increase?

Spotify’s latest earnings report showed a 10 per cent rise in revenue year-on-year, but also a quarterly loss of a whopping €86 million. The company pointed to rising employee costs and “social charges” – taxes tied to stock performance – as key reasons behind the change.

In India, the hike follows Spotify’s October 2023 move to restrict select free-tier features, which is a clear push to boost paid subscriptions. CEO Daniel Ek has also highlighted India as a key market for future growth.

Also, the music streaming landscape in India has shifted. Local platforms like Gaana and Resso have either exited or changed hands, leaving Spotify to compete mainly with YouTube Music, Apple Music, Amazon Music, JioSaavn, and Hungama.

Spotify’s betting that its features, from AI DJ and Blend playlists to sharp recommendations, will be enough to keep users tuned in, even with the price bump. Because for many listeners, it’s more than an app, it’s part of their daily routine. What are your thoughts about the new pricing tiers? Drop a comment to let us know.
