Spotify has rightfully established itself as a music-streaming giant across the world. In fact, the smartphone app also has numerous dedicated fans waiting for it to drop its year-end wrap with bated breath. But while Spotify remains synonymous with music-streaming, it still seems to have a lot of catching up to do when it comes to podcasts, which make up a significant part of the app.
That said, the brand recently introduced a tiny addition that may just make it easier for users seeking popular podcasters. Here’s everything we know:
Spotify introduces 'Plays' for podcasts
Spotify hosts a variety of podcasts across genres, whether it is news, creepy stories, comedy talk shows or even religious discussions, there’s something for everyone. But, of course, it’s easy to feel spoilt for choice with a buffet of content available at your fingertips.

However, the music-streaming brand just announced its decision to include ‘Plays’, which will give seekers visibility of the number of times a podcast has been listened to. According to a newsroom post published by Spotify, the feature will reportedly highlight up-and-coming podcast shows that are garnering more views. It also explained how this number ‘captures engagement’, for both audio and video content, and reflects the number of times users have played it over time.
Spotify 'Plays' feature for podcasts: When will it be available for everyone?
The count is said to be visible next to the podcast title on the homepage, episode page, as well as show page. The report also states that it could be available on Spotify for creators and Megaphone. The feature is specifically aimed at encouraging users who want to discover popular podcasts with ease. The streaming giant also seems to be aiming to create a layer of credibility for established podcasters or boost smaller, upcoming creators on the platform.
Moreover, it will also give users an insight into what works for their page and what content requires modification. The feature is currently being rolled out for users and should gradually be available to everyone in the coming weeks. If you haven’t received it, don’t worry, as the company might be deploying it in a phased manner. For more news, make sure you subscribe to Unboxed by Croma.
