Table fan wattage explained: How much electricity do table fans use?

Think of a table fan’s wattage rating as an indicating of how much power it needs in operation. In other words, table fan wattage is the energy required to blow air. A large fan will require more power to move the heavier blades, a faster fan will use more power because it’s spinning faster, and so on. Ideally, you want a fan that balances air flow and power usage with an efficient design.

Expected wattages

Generally, one can expect a standard 400 mm table fan to consume about 70 W of power per hour. A smaller personal fan will consume about 25 W at a high, while a larger fan can consume over 90 W. If you’re using a standard table fan for 8-10 hours a day, the fan will consume about 0.7 kWh or units per day, which will translate to an electricity bill of Rs 100-150 per month depending on local rates.

Improving efficiency

Typical table fans use less efficient but cheaper AC motors. By switching to a more efficient BLDC motor, you can drop power consumption to less than half. If you intend to use table fans for extended periods during the day, and especially when you have multiple fans in your home, it makes sense to switch to a more efficient design.

Dropping fan speed to low or medium can also drop power consumption by 15-20%, which can again be beneficial to those who use fans for extended periods. Note that enabling oscillations generally increases power consumption by about 2W, but this is an insignificant amount of power so don’t worry about it.

For reference, a regular 400 mm table fan consumes as much power as the average laptop or ceiling fan.

Why cleaning fans is important

Cleaning your fan, especially if it’s old and dirty, can yield notable efficiency gains. Gunk build-up on fan blades adds a small amount of weight and also affects the airflow. Drag goes up, airflow efficiency is reduced, and the fan ends up consuming slightly more power than normal.

Again, the increase in power consumption is insignificant in most cases making the need for cleaning more a question of hygiene than anything else, but if you use a large number of table fans, the increase in power consumption will have an impact.

Here’s our recommendation: If you want a table fan for occasional use, just buy the cheapest one you’re comfortable using. For daily use or as your primary fan, it’s worth investing in a BLDC fan for the vastly improved efficiency.
