Tips to consider when buying an air purifier

With rising air pollution and constant news about the ill effects of breathing due to polluted air, we have rapidly moved towards adopting air purifiers as one of the essential home appliances. But air purifiers are still relatively uncommon and most people don’t know what these are, and how they work. They also don’t know what to consider before buying one. Well, fear not, we can help you make a smart purchase.

6 things to keep in mind when buying an air purifier

1. CADR: It stands for Clean Air Delivery Rate, which is a metric to measure the performance of residential air purifiers. It is measured in CFM or Cubic Feet per Minute, and basically tells you how much area it can clean air in a minute. It defines the capacity of your purifier so if you have a bigger room, then you should get an air purifier with a higher CFM.

2. Filters: The most standard method of purification is through the HEPA filter. It removes other contaminants such as viruses, bacteria, pollen, PM2.5, allergens, and more from the air. You may have heard about True HEPA. It is based on the American standards in which a filter has to capture 99.97% of the particulate matter sized at 0.3 microns. You can look for H13 and H14 in an air purifier to know whether it has a true HEPA filter or not.

3. Noise level: Another bigger factor to consider is the noise level. Almost all air purifiers produce a noise level of 60-80 decibels when operating at the Auto level. If you have to use your purifier for through the night while you sleep, it is imperative to buy a purifier that isn’t too noisy.

4. Filter replacement cost: You need to change the air filter of an air purifier at regular intervals – ideally every 6-12 months. It counts in the running cost and not all filters will cost the same. Many times, you have to buy the filter from the same brand so you need to be aware of its cost and the frequency of filter change beforehand.

5. Warranty: This is a machine that runs for long hours, and thus needs to be durable and well built. Apart from this, ensure that the brand also offers good after-sales service to make your ownership worry-free. Brands offer different warranties, sometimes up to five years.

6. Innovative features: Even though the main function of an air purifier is to provide clean air for breathing, small comfort features add to the overall quality of experience. There are many air purifiers in the market with a dedicated app that you can install on your phone. These let you control the air purifier remotely from your phone.

These are some of the most basic, yet crucial things, you should have in mind while deciding what air purifier to buy.
