Scam calls are rampant in India with people incurring financial losses. Per Truecaller, 7.7 billion fraud calls were identified last year. Now, the popular caller identity platform has announced a new feature called ‘family protection’
This new feature allows a trusted member to monitor and disconnect suspicious calls. This is a wider global rollout after the initial release that was limited to a few countries like Sweden, Chile, Malaysia, and Kenya.
Truecaller’s new feature offers real-time scam alerts for families
The ‘family protection’ feature makes one trusted tech-savy member to become an admin. They can receive alerts about suspected spam calls and even remotely disconnect call on behalf of the user. A group of up to five members can be created.
The admin receives a real-time notification when Truecaller detects a suspicious or flagged number calling a member in the group.

The feature is live on both Android and iOS but the ability to end calls is only available on Android at the moment.
Android users can also grant permission to the admin to detect their real-time activity such as walking, driving, battery level, and phone sound setting. This helps the admin to keep tabs on the members including senior citizens.
Admins can also maintain a shared blocklist of spam numbers across all devices in the family network. They can also configure different levels of protection.
Truecallers says that privacy boundaries remain intact even though the new feature shares suspicious caller details with the admin. Nobody in the group can access each other’s personal data such as SMS and call logs.
The ‘Family Protection’ feature is free to use. Some advanced security controls may require a premium family subscription. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for more tech updates.
