What is macOS?

Apple products need no introduction when it comes to consumer electronics. Their iPhone lineup, along with iPads, are some of the most popular products in their respective categories. Other than these, Apple is equally popular for computers. And the operating system that powers Apple’s line of Macintosh computers is macOS. It stands for the Macintosh operating system. MacOS is Unix based operating system.

MacOS is a proprietary graphical operating system developed and marketed by Apple Inc. for its line of Macintosh computers. It is the successor to the classic macOS and debuted for the first time in 2001. All the macOS versions thereafter are named after big cats and geographical locations including the macOS 10.0 called “Cheetah”. MacOS is known for its user-friendly interface, stability, and security features.

Today, it is the second most widely used desktop OS, after Microsoft Windows and ahead of ChromeOS. It powers MacBook, iMac, Mac mini, and Mac pro. MacOS is not available on any other type of device and is exclusive to Apple’s Macintosh computer. Apart from a user-friendly, and easy-to-use graphical interface, one of the core advantages of macOS is its seamless integration with other Apple products to form a mature ecosystem of interconnected devices where you can use multiple Apple products together more productively and efficiently.
