What is a Chromebook?

One of the most underrated, yet versatile, pieces of tech that people often end up disregarding for being less powerful, is a Chromebook. That is, if they don’t know what it is in the first place.

What is a Chromebook?

A Chromebook is a device that resembles a regular laptop in its design, shape, and structure. The main differentiating factor between it and a regular laptop is the operating system (OS) it runs on. Rather than Microsoft Windows or macOS, a Chromebook runs on Chrome OS, a cloud-based operating system developed by Google. Put simply, Chrome OS is a skinned version of the Chrome browser with various added features and functionalities to provide for a richer user experience.

Who should consider purchasing a Chromebook?

With an ever-growing push towards online education, Chromebooks are a sensible option for parents to give to their kids too, for attending classes online as well as doing other necessary academic work.

But they have a few notable disadvantages as well. A limited selection of software support, limited storage, compatibility with certain websites or web applications, and almost non-existent gaming capabilities are some of the primary points of concern for any potential buyer.

If one plans to use their laptops for heavier tasks such as gaming, editing, desigining or simulations, a conventional laptop with a CPU, GPU and RAM which can handle the same may be a better choice.
