New WhatsApp About brings quick status updates

WhatsApp brings back its About status with a modern twist

WhatsApp has announced through its official blog that its long-standing About feature is making a return in an upgraded format. The company explained that this early feature, familiar to long-time users, is being revived with a more modern and flexible approach.

While the initial announcement offers only a brief look at what is changing, it signals a shift toward quicker and more expressive communication inside the app. The complete update provides a clearer understanding of how the redesigned About will fit into everyday chats.

WhatsApp brings back and improves the About feature

WhatsApp shared that the refreshed About section is meant to help people convey their current status through a short phrase and an emoji. This makes it easier for others to understand why someone may not respond right away or whether they are free to talk.

The feature is now positioned prominently at the top of one-on-one conversations and on profile pages, making it more noticeable than before. If someone wants to react or follow up, they can tap on the About message inside a chat and respond instantly, creating a more natural back-and-forth without writing a full update.

The updated About also includes a flexible timing system. While the default visibility lasts for one day, users can shorten or extend this period based on their preference. These options can be adjusted from the Set About menu in the app’s settings.

Privacy options and rollout timeline

WhatsApp is giving users control over who can view their About. People can restrict visibility to their contacts or allow a broader audience, depending on individual privacy needs. The goal is to make sharing context easier without revealing more information than intended.

The company confirmed that the redesigned About feature is rolling out to all mobile users beginning this week. With this return, WhatsApp aims to make quick personal updates more helpful and relevant across conversations.
