WhatsApp is preparing to replace Tenor with Klipy as one of its default GIF providers; a behind-the-scenes change that ensures your favourite reaction GIFs keep flowing uninterrupted.
The update was spotted in the latest iOS beta (version 26.2.10.70) by WABetaInfo. Currently available via Apple’s TestFlight programme, it has been confirmed that the switch is actively under development.
You may be wondering why the sudden move? Well, Tenor has announced it will shut down its API services on June 30, 2026, and has already stopped onboarding new developers. For apps that rely on Tenor’s vast GIF library, the clock is ticking, so WhatsApp has proactively decided to switch lanes.
Why WhatsApp is moving now
To stay ahead of that deadline, WhatsApp is integrating Klipy, a content platform that hosts GIFs, memes, and stickers through an official API designed for app-level sharing. Once Tenor goes offline, Klipy will step in automatically for affected users, with no action required on their part.

WhatsApp plans to migrate existing Tenor users seamlessly, simply routing searches to Klipy in the background. Shared GIFs will carry a small Klipy label, offering transparency about the source, but the overall experience is expected to remain familiar.
What changes for users
At present, WhatsApp supports GIF searches through both Giphy and Tenor, though availability varies by region and account configuration. Users who already rely on Giphy will not see any changes. Those currently using Tenor will be switched to Klipy once the transition rolls out.
And WhatsApp is not alone in this shift. Other platforms, including Discord, have also begun moving away from Tenor in preparation for its June shutdown.
While WhatsApp has not confirmed an exact release date, the migration is expected to be completed well before July 1, 2026, ensuring that your group chats never miss that perfectly timed eyeroll or applause GIF.
