It’s official. WhatsApp is pulling the plug on older smartphones starting June 1, 2025. If you’re still rocking a vintage iPhone 5s or an OG Moto G, consider this your wake-up call.
With over 3.5 billion users worldwide, WhatsApp’s reach is staggering. But keeping the service fresh, fast, and secure means occasionally dropping the dead weight. Meta says the phase-out is necessary to introduce new features and tighten security, which can be a challenge on outdated operating systems.

So, here is the full list of phones that will lose WhatsApp support come June 1.
List of phones that will lose WhatsApp access
Initially, WhatsApp had planned the cutoff for May 2025 but the company extended it to June 1, giving users an extra month to prepare. After that, if your device doesn’t make the cut, you’ll find yourself locked out of chats and voice notes.
For iPhone users, WhatsApp will bid adieu to any device running iOS 15 or earlier. This includes:
– iPhone 5s
– iPhone 6
– iPhone 6 Plus
– iPhone 6s,
– iPhone 6s Plus
– iPhone SE (1st Gen)
On the Android side of things, devices still stuck on Android 5.0 or earlier will lose access to WhatsApp. Here’s the list:
– Samsung Galaxy S4
– Samsung Galaxy Note 3
– Sony Xperia Z1
– LG G2
– Huawei Ascend P6
– Moto G (1st Gen)
– Moto E (2014)
– Moto Razr HD
If you’re using any one of these Apple or Android devices, you’re on the chopping block.
How to prepare for WhatsApp’s end of support
If you’re on an old phone, you’ve got until June 1 to make the switch. Here’s what to do:
Step 1: Switch to a newer phone that supports iOS 16+ or Android 6.0+; ideally the latest iOS 18 and Android 16 to make sure it’s future-proof
Step 2: Backup your chats by heading to Settings > Chats > Chat Backup.
Step 3: Hit ‘Back Up Now’ to save your messages to iCloud or Google Drive
Step 4: When setting up WhatsApp on your shiny new phone, restore your chat history from the cloud
