Ever imagined Apple adding cameras to its AirPods? While it may sound unusual at first, recent leaks suggest that the Cupertino-based giant could be exploring this idea. If these reports turn out to be accurate, the move could introduce a new way of interacting with wireless earbuds and potentially set a trend that other brands may eventually follow.
Infrared cameras and visual intelligence features
According to multiple leaks, Apple may introduce a high-end variant of the AirPods Pro equipped with tiny infrared cameras embedded within each earbud. Analysts have previously suggested that these sensors could allow the earbuds to detect gestures, recognise surroundings, and enhance spatial audio experiences, particularly when paired with devices such as Apple’s mixed reality headset.
The addition of infrared cameras could also support visual intelligence-based AI functions, potentially enabling contextual awareness and improved interaction with nearby devices or environments. Leakers have claimed that the new version may not replace the current AirPods Pro entirely.
Instead, Apple could position it as a more premium alternative, similar to how the company offers different tiers within its AirPods lineup. While one source suggested pricing similar to the existing model, industry observers believe a higher price is more likely, possibly around $299 (~Rs 27,100) compared to the current $249 (~Rs 22,550) price point.
Launch timing and product positioning
Reports indicate that Apple may continue selling the current AirPods Pro alongside the camera-enabled model, giving users a choice based on features and budget. This approach aligns with Apple’s recent strategy of offering multiple versions within the same product family. Historically, Apple refreshes AirPods hardware every few years, so introducing a mid-cycle upgrade would mark a slight shift from its typical release pattern.
There is no confirmed launch timeline yet, but Apple often unveils new audio products alongside its annual iPhone event in the second half of the year. If the rumours are accurate, the next AirPods Pro iteration could signal Apple’s move toward integrating advanced sensing technology and AI-driven experiences into everyday wearable audio devices.
