Mobile gaming on Android smartphones has steadily grown from casual titles to complex, console-style experiences. However, physical controller support has often lagged behind expectations. Now, new findings suggest that this gap may finally narrow.
According to Android Authority, early Android 17 code hints at Google working on deeper, system-level tools aimed at improving how controllers function across games. These discoveries point toward meaningful upgrades that could reshape the way players interact with Android devices.
System-level remapping
As per the report, a new permission related to controller remapping appears to be designed for apps signed with system keys. This suggests that Android 17 may introduce a dedicated Settings menu where players can reconfigure button actions without relying on individual game support.
For users who struggle with awkward layouts or accessibility limitations, this change could finally standardise the customisation of controls. The update may also deepen compatibility with USB-C and Bluetooth controllers by reducing latency and improving recognition for more models beyond standard Xbox-style layouts.
These adjustments could eliminate the need for third-party tools that often behave inconsistently.
Virtual gamepad
Another key reference involves virtual gamepad features. This software-defined device can intercept real button presses and forward altered input to games, enabling seamless remapping even when titles do not natively support it.
More importantly, it hints at a potential bridge between physical controllers and touch-only games. If implemented, Android 17 could allow button remapping over on-screen controls, opening up access to thousands of games that previously lacked proper controller functionality.
With rising interest in gaming on Android phones, handheld Android devices and cloud gaming platforms, these upgrades may encourage developers to treat Android hardware more like general-purpose gaming machines.
