Android 17 may bring AirDrop-like tap to share feature to all compatible phones

Android may soon add a faster and more seamless file-sharing method. Clues found in Android 17 builds indicate that a new feature is currently being tested across multiple platforms. Here’s a look what to expect from the said feature.

Tap to share could simplify file transfers on Android

According to findings spotted by Android Authority, evidence of a feature called “Tap to Share” has been spotted across Samsung’s One UI 9, Google Play Services, and Android 17 system-level code. The feature is expected to let users transfer files or contacts by simply bringing two devices close together, similar to how AirDrop works on Apple devices.

Leaked builds of One UI 9 show prompts suggesting users can place the top of their phone near another device to begin sharing. The feature appears to rely on NFC to detect nearby devices, after which Quick Share handles the actual file transfer process.

Interestingly, earlier traces of a similar concept were seen as an experimental feature in older One UI versions. At the time, it appeared limited to Samsung devices, but newer findings suggest it may expand across the broader Android ecosystem.

Google and Samsung collaboration likely

Further clues indicate that this feature may not be restricted to a single brand. References found in Google Play Services and Android 17 builds point to a system-level service, suggesting wider adoption across devices. Internally, the feature is also linked to something called “Gesture Exchange,” which may act as the trigger for initiating transfers.

This also hints at continued collaboration between Google and Samsung, similar to past improvements made to Quick Share. While NFC will likely be required, meaning some budget devices may not support it, the overall experience could become much more intuitive than current sharing methods.

If introduced with Android 17, this feature could reduce the steps needed to send files, making Quick Share faster and easier to use in everyday situations.
