Samsung has barely finished rolling out One UI 8.5, but it’s already looking ahead. The company has reportedly begun internal testing of One UI 9 for the Samsung Galaxy S26 series, giving us an early glimpse at what Android 17 on a Samsung phone might feel like.
The Galaxy S26 lineup, which launched just last month, currently runs One UI 8.5 based on Android 16. That update hasn’t even made its way to older flagships yet, but signs suggest Samsung’s software teams are already deep into the next cycle.
A familiar Samsung playbook, just slightly faster
According to reports, the first internal build of One UI 9 has surfaced on Samsung’s servers, with firmware versions tied to the Galaxy S26 Ultra. Publications that managed to access the build note only minor visual tweaks so far, including slightly larger controls within the quick settings panel.
That might sound underwhelming, but early test builds rarely reveal much. Samsung typically uses these internal versions to stabilise performance before layering in more noticeable features closer to public beta.
If the timeline holds, a public beta could arrive around late May or early June in 2026. A stable rollout is expected later in September, which would align with Samsung’s usual update cadence.
One UI 9 could debut with the next foldables
Samsung is also expected to ship One UI 9 out of the box with its next foldables, likely the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Flip 8. That has been the company’s recent pattern, using new foldables as a showcase for its latest software.

In the meantime, One UI 8.5 is just getting started. The update brings refinements to Samsung’s growing set of AI features, including upgrades to Photo Assist and Now Nudge, along with more customisation options for the Quick Panel and additional privacy controls.
For users, it’s a reminder of how quickly the Android update cycle has tightened. Samsung is no longer just catching up with Google’s releases, it’s increasingly moving in parallel, sometimes even a step ahead in terms of rollout readiness. Are you excited about One UI 9?
