Android gets a logo makeover and several new features: Here’s what you need to know

Android 14, the latest version of Google’s smartphone operating system, is just around the corner. Subsequently, Google has also announced a little makeover for its mascot – the Bugdroidwith a fresh 3D-esque look. The mascot has been reimagined in 3D, gets new colours, accessories as well as fresh animations. However, the mascot is not the only thing that’s new, as the tech giant has also introduced a slew of new features to the operating system. Read on to find out.

Assistant at a glance

Google’s Assistant at a Glance has now been revamped with some machine learning algorithms, and offers information including events near you, weather, details of your upcoming trip, and so on.

Image Q&A

Google has introduced a new feature on its Lookout app called Image Q&A. This feature makes use of AI and generates descriptions of images, which helps people with low or no vision get a better idea about images, as well as ask questions regarding the same. The Lookout app now also gets added support for up to 11 languages, including Chinese, Korean, and Japanese.

Import and digitise passes

Google Wallet now features the ability to import and digitise passes with barcodes or QR codes. This basically means that you can upload a photo of any important passes such as your bus or train pass, or perhaps a library card, and store a digital version of it to use in case you misplace or simply forget the original ones at home

Android Auto support for Zoom and Webex

Android Auto, which helps you connect your smartphone to your car’s infotainment system, now comes with in-built support for Zoom and Webex. This means you can join meetings and even browse through spreadsheets and decks when you’re stuck in traffic. You can also schedule meetings on the move and mute your mic and/or end calls while driving. The feature is aimed at reducing usage of your phone while driving, thereby ensuring greater road safety.

Sleep tracking on Google Assistant

You can now add your sleep tracking data from your Fitbit or Google Fit app to your Google Assistant’s routine. Once done, simply say “Hey Google, good morning” when you wake up. Google Assistant will give you all relevant stats of your sleep including how many hours you slept, when you fell asleep, how many times you woke up in between, and more, alongside your morning news, updates, and reminders.

In other news, Android 14 was earlier slated to launch on September 5. However, Google has now reportedly postponed the launch to October 4, leaving Android loyalists in more anticipation than ever. With so many new features already being rolled out, we can’t wait to see what Google has in store for us with Android 14. Can you?
