Apple’s 15-inch MacBook Air is the thinnest and the most powerful yet

Apple unveiled its latest addition to its MacBook lineup at last night’s WWDC 2023 – the 15-inch MacBook Air. Apple’s latest offering is aimed at those looking to upgrade from their current Macs as well as first-time customers. Here’s everything to know about these new laptops.

15-inch MacBook Air features, specifications

Design

The new MacBook Air is the world’s thinnest 15-inch laptop, at just 11.5mm, and weighing in at just 1.49kg. It is also nearly 40% thinner and about 0.22kg lighter than the closest comparable laptop. The device also features a fan-less design for a silent operation.

Display and speakers

The 15-inch Macbook Air features a high-resolution 15.3-inch Liquid Retina display, which has support for over one billion colours and up to 500 nits of peak brightness.

On the audio front, the MacBook Air features a six-speaker setup with two tweeters and two force-cancelling woofers. Furthermore, the MacBook Air also features support for spatial audio and Dolby Atmos, to provide an immersive audio experience.

Talking about connectivity, the laptop features two thunderbolt ports and support for up to a 6K external display, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack on the sides. It also features a 1080p camera for video conferencing, which helps provide for crystal-clear picture quality during calls.

Performance

Apple’s latest addition to its MacBook lineup is powered by the M2 chip developed in-house by Apple, which is nearly 12 times faster than the fastest Intel-based MacBook Air, and also nearly twice as fast when compared to the closest PC powered by an Intel Core i7 processor.

It features an eight-core CPU with four performance cores and four efficiency cores, as well as a 10-core GPU, and a 16-core Neural Engine. The M2 chip features support for 100GB/s memory bandwidth, and also supports up to 24GB of fast unified memory, making for a smooth multitasking experience. Furthermore, the device also features up to 2TB of SSD-based storage.

Battery

With support for MagSafe charging as well as charging through the USB type C port on the sides, the MacBook Air offers up to 18 hours of battery life, ensuring all day usage with ease.

 Operating System

The MacBook runs macOS Ventura out-of-the-box. But it will soon get the macOS Sonoma update, announced last night. The new operating system gets a bunch of new features, including new live wallpapers, desktop widgets, upgrades to Safari, and more.

15-inch MacBook Air price, availability

Apple’s new 15-inch MacBook Air with M2 will be available in four colour options – midnight, starlight, silver, and space gray. Prices for the device start at Rs 1,34,900, and it will be available in select markets starting June 13.
