Apple to introduce five new satellite features for iPhone users

Significant improvements are expected to come to Apple iPhone satellite feature, according to a new Bloomberg report by Mark Gurman. The upcoming updates are expected to add multiple off-grid functions, allowing iPhone users to stay connected even without Wi-Fi or cellular networks. While the features remain in development, some advanced options could be part of a paid model in the future.

Apple’s expanding satellite roadmap

According to Gurman’s Power On newsletter, Apple is working on five new satellite features on iPhone that will expand the device’s off-grid usability. These features aim to make iPhones more dependable when cellular or Wi-Fi connectivity is unavailable.

Apple Maps via satellite

One of the key additions will allow navigation through Apple Maps without needing a network connection. This new satellite feature for iPhone will help users find directions and locations even in remote areas or during emergencies, linking seamlessly with the existing SOS functionality.

Photos in Messages via satellite

The company is also planning to add photo-sharing support to its Messages app through satellite connectivity. Users will be able to send images to contacts when completely offline, a significant upgrade over the current text-only satellite messaging.

Natural usage improvements

This Apple iPhone new satellite feature will make satellite access easier and more natural. Unlike the current system, users may no longer need to point their device toward the sky, allowing connectivity indoors, in vehicles, or even with the phone in their pocket.

5G NTN satellite integration

Future iPhones, possibly starting with the iPhone 18 series, could include 5G NTN technology. This allows cell towers to connect to satellites, improving coverage in weak-signal zones and maintaining faster, more stable connections.

Satellite API for third-party apps

Apple is reportedly developing an API framework that lets developers integrate satellite functions into their own apps. This could extend satellite connectivity to third-party tools like WhatsApp or navigation services, enhancing the usefulness of satellite features across the iPhone ecosystem.

At present, all satellite features on iPhone remain free. However, future capabilities might involve payments made directly to satellite service providers or carriers, as Apple continues refining its long-term satellite strategy.
