In a quiet, yet telling, leak from the heart of China’s social media circuit, Apple appears to be stepping into the ultra-high-resolution game. A known source for sneak peeks into Cupertino’s plans, dropped a hint that the tech giant is testing a 200MP camera sensor for a future iPhone, putting it in direct competition with Samsung’s Galaxy S25 Ultra.
Apple to introduce 200MP iPhone?
The iPhone’s camera journey has always been a carefully orchestrated dance of hardware and software. While Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra, and its successors S24 and S25 Ultra, have flaunted 200MP sensors for years, Apple has remained comfortably planted in its precision-tuned 48MP territory.
But if the latest whispers from Digital Chat Station are to be believed, Apple’s R&D labs are now flirting with the idea of going big. Really big.
Imagine an iPhone capable of capturing hyper-detailed shots where every freckle, strand of hair, or leaf vein is preserved with almost microscopic clarity. This isn’t just about vanity megapixels; a 200MP sensor could open up creative possibilities for photographers, from ultra-high-res crops to massive prints that retain crispness.
It’s worth noting that even though Apple is reportedly experimenting with this sensor, the tech likely won’t see the light of day this year. The upcoming iPhone 17 Pro series is already rumoured to stick with an all-48MP camera setup.

So far, the iPhone 18 Pro models haven’t been linked to this 200MP speculation either. If the feature does make it into production, it’s probably a couple of years out – think iPhone 19 or later.
For now, we’ll just have to watch and wait, as Apple seemingly preps to turn the camera arms race up another notch.
