Artificial intelligence is here, and it is here to stay. Competition in the space has been fast heating up. Multiple tech giants, including Meta, Google and Microsoft, and of course, OpenAI, have all been working towards establishing their dominance in the AI space, with multiple offerings. Apple is one company, however, which seems to have mostly stayed away from AI. Until now that is.

Apple may soon foray into AI

A recent Bloomberg report claims that top Apple executives are working on a project for the company that forays into the AI space in a big way. The project, as per the report, has an annual budget of nearly $1 billion.

How Apple plans to do this, it says, is to introduce AI capabilities not only with its virtual voice assistant – Siri, but also in its most popular operating system, iOS, as a whole.

As per the report, John Giannandrea, a senior Apple executive, is leading a team working to integrate AI capabilities with its virtual voice assistant, Siri. The new, AI-enabled version of Siri could be rolled out to iPhone users as early as next year.

Not just Siri though. Apple is also reportedly working on integrating AI capabilities based on Apple’s Large Language Model (LLM), dubbed AppleGPT, into its next big iOS update.

Some of the apps where one may see this integration are Apple Music with auto-generated playlists similar to Spotify, Keynote to help users generate presentations from scratch, and more.

The report adds that AI integration could also be seen with developer apps such as Xcode, to help developers write applications faster. This is in line with Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot, which offers suggestions to auto-write bits of code as a developer goes about their work.

However, while the company is foraying into AI, what remains to be seen as of yet is just how Apple plans to deploy the same. Whether it will be cloud-based, on-device, or hybrid.
