Next-gen smartwatch upgrades incoming

This upgrade could make Apple Watch Ultra 4 worth the wait

Apple has already had a busy year with multiple product launches, but the spotlight is now shifting to the upcoming Apple Watch Ultra 4. Expected to arrive later this year, the smartwatch is tipped to bring a mix of meaningful upgrades rather than dramatic changes, focusing on improving health tracking, performance, and everyday usability.

Brand new health sensors

Recent reports suggest that the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could significantly expand its sensor system, potentially doubling the number of components compared to the current model. This upgrade is expected to improve accuracy by relying more on direct measurements instead of algorithm-based estimations.

As a result, users may see better readings for metrics like heart rate, blood oxygen levels, and sleep tracking. At the same time, improved efficiency in these sensors could also contribute to better overall performance and battery life.

Subtle design changes and Touch ID

While earlier rumours hinted at a major redesign, recent updates suggest that the Apple Watch Ultra 4 may retain a largely familiar look with only minor refinements. Changes in materials or slight adjustments in size and weight could improve comfort and durability. The much-anticipated microLED display is reportedly not ready yet, which may have limited more noticeable design upgrades this year.

One of the more interesting additions could be Touch ID. Leaks indicate that Apple is exploring biometric authentication for the watch, possibly integrated into the side button, Digital Crown, or Action button. This could make unlocking the device and authorising payments more convenient, reducing the need for passcodes during daily use.

Battery life is also expected to improve, likely driven by a more efficient S-series chip and optimised sensors. This could result in longer usage without increasing the physical battery size. While features like blood sugar monitoring are still in development, they are unlikely to debut with this model.

With a likely launch in September, the Apple Watch Ultra 4 appears to focus on refining core features rather than introducing experimental ones.
