If you’re someone working with code across multiple GitHub repositories, ChatGPT’s new deep research integration might just become your next essential tool. Currently in beta and rolling out to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users, this feature brings real-time reasoning to your GitHub content, with the added power of live data access.
Pull insights directly from your codebase
Once connected, deep research can fetch information from your repositories, including code, README files, and documentation. Ask it a question like “Where do I handle file uploads?” and it will search your repos, scan the code, and cite the exact snippets that matter, all within seconds.
Connecting is simple. Go to the Deep research tab in the composer, select GitHub, and authorise access. Alternatively, head to Settings > Connected apps > GitHub, and select the repositories you’d like ChatGPT to use. You can manage permissions anytime via the gear icon.
Worried about what’s shared? Don’t be. ChatGPT only sends search queries based on your prompt to GitHub, and you’re always in control of which repositories are accessible. If you’re using ChatGPT Team or another business product, your data isn’t used to train models by default.
Some repositories might take around 5 minutes to appear. If you don’t see yours, it could be private, newly created, blocked by an admin, or not yet indexed by GitHub’s search engine. You can resolve this via your GitHub settings or by manually triggering indexing.

While individual file search isn’t supported yet, this feature still brings a powerful upgrade to how developers explore and understand their own code. A smarter way to interact with your GitHub repositories is here, one query at a time.
