ChatGPT has received a new feature called ‘Shopping Research’, designed to help users find products more easily. According to Open AI, the feature builds detailed guides after understanding what shoppers need. It gathers information from trusted online sources and presents options in a structured format.
The broader rollout reveals how ChatGPT aims to assist users with more in-depth product evaluation instead of basic queries.
How the Shopping Research experience works
Shopping Research appears when users ask a product-related question or select the tool from the menu. A visual interface opens where users describe their requirements and answer clarifying questions about budget, intended use and preferred features. If a user has memory enabled, ChatGPT can shape recommendations based on previous conversations.

Once the session starts, ChatGPT collects updated details from reliable retail sites, including pricing, availability, specifications, images and reviews. Users can guide the selection by marking items as not interesting or requesting similar options.
After gathering enough information, the system provides a personalised buyer’s guide containing top choices, notable differences and potential trade-offs. The feature works well for categories such as electronics, home products, beauty items and sports equipment. It is also available through ChatGPT Pulse for Pro users, where it can suggest relevant buyer’s guides based on past discussions.
Technology, accuracy and availability
Shopping Research runs on a version of GPT 5 mini that is trained with reinforcement learning for shopping-related tasks. It reads information directly from verified online sources and focuses on accuracy through cross-checking.

Open AI highlights that chats are never shared with retailers and results are drawn only from publicly available retail listings, avoiding low-quality or untrusted sites. The company notes that minor inaccuracies about pricing or availability may occur and encourages users to confirm details on retailer websites.
The feature is rolling out on mobile and web for ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro users with expanded access during the holiday period.
