ChatGPT’s new image generation tool brings accuracy, precise edits to rival Gemini Nano Banana

ChatGPT already allows users to generate images using the “Create Image” option. However, OpenAI has now rolled out a dedicated image generation tool focused on speed, accuracy, and creative control. While this update does not radically change how users access image generation, it refines the overall experience by improving edit precision and output speed.

Alongside the model upgrade, OpenAI has also introduced a refreshed image creation space within ChatGPT, setting the tone for deeper visual exploration.

GPT Image 1.5 and improved image editing

The new update is powered by GPT Image 1.5, OpenAI’s latest general-purpose image generation model, which is now available to all ChatGPT users and developers through the API. According to OpenAI, the model generates images up to four times faster than before, making creative iteration smoother, especially during complex workflows.

A key improvement lies in instruction accuracy, as the model now applies requested changes more precisely while keeping important details such as lighting, composition, facial likeness, and overall visual consistency intact. This refined editing capability allows users to make targeted adjustments like adding or removing elements, blending styles, or transforming specific objects without affecting the rest of the image.

The model also shows noticeable progress in creative transformations, enabling stylistic changes and layout edits that remain faithful to the original concept. Another improvement comes in text rendering, where GPT Image 1.5 can handle denser and smaller text with greater clarity, an area where earlier image models often struggled.

Alongside the model upgrade, OpenAI has introduced a dedicated Images section within the ChatGPT interface. This new space is designed to make image creation more intuitive, offering preset styles, trending prompts, and visual inspiration without requiring detailed written instructions. Users can also continue generating new images while others are processing, reducing idle time during creative sessions.

GPT Image 1.5 is rolling out globally across ChatGPT and the API, with the previous image model remaining accessible through a custom option. OpenAI notes that while the update marks a meaningful step forward, further improvements in realism, multilingual output, and scientific accuracy are still planned for future releases.
