DJI ventures into smart home territory with new Romo robot vacuum line

DJI has officially entered the smart home fray with its first robot vacuum cleaner, the Romo. This gadget is not just another circular puck destined to get stuck on a rug. That’s because the company has crammed its signature drone technology into this floor-dweller. Let’s see how it stands out.

DJI Romo is the company's first robotic vacuum cleaner

The Romo navigates with a sophisticated binocular fisheye vision system and three wide-angle solid-state laser radars. This setup gives it excellent awareness, allowing it to detect and dodge objects as thin as a charging cable with pinpoint precision.

The tech, borrowed directly from the company’s high-end drones, functions perfectly in both bright rooms and dim lighting.

The cleaning hardware is just as impressive. The Romo boasts a 25,000 Pascal suction power to pull dirt from deep within your carpets.

Its most eye-catching feature however is a pair of flexible robotic arms. These appendages swing out from the body to scrub tight corners and clean around furniture legs, hitting the spots other robovacs always seem to miss.

Currently, this robo-vacuum has launched in China in three variants. The lineup includes the standard all-white Romo S, a Romo A with a transparent robot shell, and the top-tier Romo P.

As for the base station, it aims for a completely hands-off experience. It automatically empties the dustbin, swaps clean and dirty water for the mop, scrubs the mop pads, and even sterilises itself with UV light.

This level of tech does not come cheap. Pricing begins at roughly Rs 57,000 for the entry-level Romo S. Again, the Romo series is only available in China, but DJI has confirmed a global release is planned for later this year.
