DJI has launched the RS 5, its newest professional camera gimbal, with a clear focus on making life easier for creators who often work alone. Introduced in China, the RS 5 builds on DJI’s familiar RS series with thoughtful upgrades rather than a full redesign.
At a glance, the DJI RS 5 gimbal looks much like its predecessor. However, if you dive deeper into the upgraded features, the changes begin to feel purposeful. Here’s everything you should know.
Touchscreen tracking, without the extra steps
The most notable addition is the RS Enhanced Intelligent Tracking Module. It attaches magnetically and streams a live camera feed directly to the gimbal’s touchscreen, allowing users to tap on a subject and lock tracking instantly.
The system can recognise people, vehicles, and pets at distances of up to 10 metres. And by shifting tracking control to the screen, DJI reduces reliance on gesture controls or external camera accessories, which should appeal to one-person crews juggling framing and movement at the same time.
Motor performance has also been upgraded. DJI claims up to a 50 per cent increase in peak torque. This works alongside the company’s fifth-generation stabilisation algorithm, which is designed to handle sudden directional changes and vertical shooting more smoothly.
More power, familiar weight, longer runtimes
Despite the added muscle, the RS 5 remains relatively compact. It weighs 1.46 kg including the grip and quick-release plate, yet supports camera setups of up to 3 kg, making it suitable for most mirrorless configurations.

DJI has also focused on day-to-day usability. A native electronic handheld adapter enables more comfortable one-handed operation and low-angle shots, while a real-time Z-axis stability indicator on the display helps users adjust their movement to reduce vertical shake.
Switching between portrait and landscape modes is now quicker and no longer requires additional accessories, a small change that will matter to creators working across formats.
Balancing and transport are designed to be faster too, thanks to adjustable leveling knobs on all arms and a folded locking design. Battery life is rated at around 14 hours, with fast charging taking roughly an hour. An optional high-capacity battery can extend usage to a whopping 30 hours!
The DJI RS 5 gimbal is priced starting at 3,099 yuan (~Rs 40,390) in China, with a higher-end bundle priced at 3,899 yuan (~Rs 50,800). Pre-orders are currently open, and wider availability is expected later.
For creators already familiar with DJI’s stabilisers, the RS 5 feels like a confident refinement aimed squarely at modern, solo-led production. Is it on your wishlist? Drop a comment with your thoughts.
