Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner review

Big on suction. Big on stability.

Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner review

Dyson’s vacuum cleaners are among the best in the market at what they do, and also standout for their unique design. Yes, we mean the cordless vacuum cleaners that look like blasters from the Star Wars universe. Now, Dyson has another vacuum cleaner, which has a cord (a long one too), and again reminds us of something from Star Wars—the BB-8 droid.

The Dyson Big Ball is a corded vacuum cleaner that sports a unique design, while retaining the best bits of the handheld variants. Having spent some time with it, here’s our Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner review.

Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner design

Even at first glance it is easy to see Dyson’s design strategy with this vacuum cleaner. The Big Ball is a machine designed to easily move with you as you clean your space, and not topple over every time it hits a corner. The spherical body moves easily and rebalances itself if pushed or pulled hard, which means fewer interruptions while cleaning.

The build quality, not surprisingly, feels premium and sturdy, and the wheels glide easily across the floor. There are a bunch of bundled attachments that are tailored for different cleaning needs. These include a multi-surface head for everyday floors, brush tool for sofas and cushions, and a narrow nozzle for edges and corners. The attachments too are well-built and easily attach with a satisfying snap.

Then there’s the bagless dust bin attached on the top of the floor unit. It seems to have been borrowed from the handheld vacuum cleaners, and the 1.6 litre capacity is more than enough to last an entire cleaning session. When done, the bin can be easily emptied with a push of a button without getting your hands dirty.

It is worth noting that while this Dyson vacuum cleaner aces the manoeuvrability charts, it is a heavy unit. It may not be a big issue for many, but those living in houses with multiple floors will find it cumbersome to lug the machine across the entire home.

Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner performance

When it comes the machine’s primary objective—cleaning—the Dyson Big Ball excels. There’s enough suction power at hand to pull up fine dust, pet hair, crumbs, and embedded dirt with ease. This makes it ideal for homes with tiles, carpets, sofas, and even mattresses.

While it may look futuristic, this Dyson vacuum cleaner is fairly easy to use. Just plug it to a power socket, snap on the relevant attachment, and hit the power button to commence the cleaning session. While you need to be constantly connected, the 22-foot-long cable offers a generous reach, which means you won’t have to switch sockets when shifting between different parts of the house.

The suction power and cleaning capabilities, however, come at a cost. Noise levels. During extended cleaning sessions, the Dyson Big Ball tends to get a bit noisy, drowning out other sounds. But at no point does it get uncomfortable.

Unboxed Take: Who should buy the Dyson Big Ball?

The Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner is a serious cleaning machine. It features a futuristic design, premium build quality, and strong suction for deep cleaning sessions. It is also engineered to last for years, which explains why Dyson offers a 5-year warranty, which also includes a 2-year accidental damage protection.

It may not be as convenient as the handheld vacuum cleaners, but for those thorough cleaning sessions, there aren’t many that are better than the Dyson Big Ball.

For all the above reasons, we rate the Dyson Big Ball vacuum cleaner a 4.5/5. Stay tuned to Unboxed by Croma for more such in-depth reviews, and all things tech.
