Macs could soon get a dedicated Gemini app with Desktop Intelligence feature

A recent Bloomberg report indicates that Google has started testing a dedicated Gemini app for Mac, signalling a broader push beyond web-based access. The development comes as competition intensifies among AI platforms across devices. On Mac, the Gemini app is expected to rival the likes of ChatGPT and Claude.

Google starts testing Gemini app for macOS

The report states that Google has begun sharing an early version of the Gemini Mac app with selected users as part of a consumer beta program. This version is said to include only core features, with several capabilities still under development. The aim of this testing phase is to gather feedback and identify issues before a wider rollout.

The app is expected to support a wide range of functions, including generating images, videos, music, tables, and charts, along with handling mathematical queries and data analysis. It can also search for information online, access past conversations, and process uploaded documents and media files.

These additions are designed to make the experience more seamless compared to accessing Gemini through a browser.

Desktop Intelligence will be Gemini’s key feature for Mac

One of the key features being tested is called Desktop Intelligence, which could allow Gemini to interact with other applications on a Mac. This includes accessing contextual information from apps such as calendars or files, enabling more personalised responses based on what is visible on the screen.

The feature is said to work by analysing on-screen activity and pulling relevant data only when Gemini is active. This approach brings it closer to capabilities already seen in rival Mac apps like ChatGPT and Claude, both of which offer deeper system awareness. However, it remains unclear whether Gemini will eventually gain the ability to take direct actions within apps.

At present, Mac users rely on the web version of Gemini, making a dedicated app a notable upgrade in terms of accessibility and workflow integration. The report suggests that the app, internally known as Janus, may be nearing a public release, although Google has not officially confirmed a timeline.
