A bigger, global sequel

The curtain has been officially pulled back, revealing that the sequel to the monster smash Godzilla Minus One is titled Godzilla Minus Zero. Toho, the legendary Japanese studio behind the kaiju, made the announcement during Tokyo’s annual Godzilla Fest. They also teased the logo not long after on X (image below).

A 2026 release

While Toho is keeping the official release date under wraps, industry insiders are already talking. Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that the studio is aiming to unleash Minus Zero globally in late 2026. That timing makes total sense. Minus One smashed into theatres to kick off the Big G’s 70th-anniversary celebrations, so a 2026 release would time perfectly with the King of the Monster’s 72nd birthday.

As for OTT release, Godzilla Minus One appeared on TV six months after its theatrical release in Japan and approximately seven months after its U.S. release. Expect Minus Zero to follow a similar pattern.

Godzilla fans might remember that Minus One wasn’t just good, it was a cultural phenomenon. It crushed the box office, pulling in $56 million in North America to become the highest-grossing Japanese-language live-action film ever. It also nabbed over $50 million (JPY7.65 billion) in Japan.

The studio isn’t messing with success. The Oscar-winning dream team is back. Takashi Yamazaki is returning to write, direct, and supervise the visual effects. That means the VFX house Shirogumi, which helped win that historic Oscar, is also returning, with Toho Studios and Robot handling production.

Production is firing up this year and is already scouting locations in New Zealand and Norway. That is a massive leap from the Japan-only filming of Minus One, which was famously made for a budget of only $10-15 million.
