Google has announced that it’s bringing Gemini directly into Gmail with features designed to help you stop drowning in your inbox. While you currently have a Gemini icon on the top that launches a chat interface for you to ask questions about your mailbox, the new update appears to want to make Gemini the primary search method for all your mail.
New AI Overviews, smart replies, and inbox filtering
The standout feature here is something called AI Overviews. If that sounds familiar, it’s because Google already uses these in Search. Now when you open an email thread with dozens of replies, Gmail will automatically summarise the whole conversation into key points.
Even better, you can ask your inbox questions in plain English like “Who was that plumber who gave me a quote last year?” and Gemini will dig through your emails to find the answer.
Perhaps the most unique addition is something Google’s calling AI Inbox. This one acts like a personalised briefing that figures out who your important contacts are based on how often you email them and what your relationship seems to be. It then surfaces urgent stuff — like bills due tomorrow or appointment reminders — so those don’t get buried under promotional emails.
Google says this analysis happens securely with their standard privacy protections, though they’re only giving “trusted testers” access for now before rolling it out more widely.

On the more practical side, Help Me Write is now available to everyone for free. This lets you draft emails from scratch or polish existing ones. There are also new Suggested Replies that actually use conversation context to match how you normally write.
A Proofread feature rounds things out with grammar and tone checks, though that one’s locked behind Google AI Pro and Ultra subscriptions.
These updates are powered by Gemini 3 and are rolling out now in the US for English speakers. Google says more languages and regions are coming in the months ahead.
