Google is expanding its AI push inside the browser. The company has announced that Gemini integration in Chrome is now rolling out to new regions including India, Canada, and New Zealand, bringing its AI assistant directly into the desktop browsing experience.
The feature arrives as a sidebar tool that lets users interact with Gemini while browsing, asking questions about the page they are viewing, comparing information across tabs, or pulling context from other Google services such as Gmail, Drive and YouTube.

Gemini first appeared in Chrome in the US last September as a floating window, but the newer rollout introduces a more persistent sidebar interface designed to sit alongside the browsing experience.
A browser that understands what you're reading
Once enabled, users will see an “Ask Gemini” icon on the Chrome tab bar. Clicking it opens the AI sidebar, where Gemini can analyse the content on the active page and respond to prompts.
So, there’s no need to copy text into an AI chatbot; the assistant already knows what is on the screen. Users can ask it to summarise an article, generate a quiz from a page, or explain a topic without leaving the tab.
Google says Gemini can also work across multiple tabs, which could be useful when comparing products while shopping or evaluating travel options. Instead of switching between pages manually, users can ask Gemini to analyse the information and present a quick comparison.
The assistant can also tap into Google’s broader ecosystem. By connecting with apps such as Gmail, Maps, Calendar, Keep and YouTube, Gemini can generate contextual responses, draft emails, summarise videos with timestamped highlights, or help organise a daily schedule.
Designed for India’s multilingual web
One of the more notable changes for the India rollout is expanded language support. Alongside English, Gemini in Chrome will support languages including Hindi, Bengali, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Telugu and Tamil, reflecting the multilingual reality of the Indian internet.
Google is also introducing Gemini integration for Chrome on iOS in India. On mobile, the assistant will appear through a page-tools icon in the address bar, giving users access to similar AI features without leaving the browser.
Gemini’s image capabilities are included too. Through Google’s Nano Banana 2 generative AI tool, users can upload photos to Chrome and ask the assistant to modify them. A typical example might involve uploading a picture of a room and visualising how new furniture could look in the space.

Notably absent from this rollout are Gemini’s newer agentic browsing features, which can automatically perform tasks across websites. Those tools remain limited to AI Pro and AI Ultra users in the United States for now.
