Google's annual developer conference is almost here

Google I/O 2024 dates revealed: Here’s what to expect this year

As we zoom past the month of March, tech enthusiasts will know the season of developer conferences is just around the corner. From Apple’s WWDC to Facebook’s F8, there’s a lot coming this summer. Now, the dates for one of biggest conferences of the year are out – Google I/O 2024.

Google has just announced that I/O 2024 will be held on May 14 this year. Just like last year’s edition, the conference will be held live in front of a ‘limited audience’. However, everyone else will be able to watch the conference virtually, thanks to YouTube.

Google I/O 2024: What to expect?

With about two months to go for I/O 2024, there’s quite a bit of time for Google to create some new technological magic, but before we get there, here’s a quick look at what we think, will be the biggest talking points at the event.

AI – Gemini, Gemma, and more

2023 has been the year of AI, and 2024 is expected to be no different. With Google doubling down on Gemini recently, a number of other AI-focused announcements are also expected to be a part of the event.

History has suggested that LLMs (Large Language Models) could be a major part of the conference. At I/O 2023, Google’s LaMDA LLM and its applications were some of the biggest talking points. Similarly, more on the future of Gemini and its smaller counterpart Gemma are expected this year.

Android 15 – New features, release timeline

It isn’t exactly a surprise that one of the largest tech companies in the world is set to announce a new update to the world’s most popular operating system at its annual developer conference. Yes, we’re talking about Android 15, something Google will almost certainly talk about at I/O 2024.

With the first developer preview for Android 15 already up, Google is likely to be close to bringing the next Android version to the beta stage, before we see a stable version release probably around August-September this year.

In the meantime, I/O 2024 will be the perfect stage for Google to showcase what it has in store for Android 15. If there are new privacy focused features, AI-tools, or customisation options, expect them to be shown at the event.

New Smartphones – Pixel 8A and more

It’s not just Android that gets a facelift at the annual conference. Google also gives us a sneak peek at the hardware it is set to release through the year. In the past few years, we have seen Google show us all-out previews of its own Pixel smartphones, months ahead of launch, including the Pixel Fold, the brand’s first foldable.

This year too, we expect the tech giant to showcase upcoming Pixel smartphones, possibly including the rumoured Pixel 8A. We may also see a new smartwatch or foldable.

That is a quick summary of what to expect at Google I/O 2024. Of course, we should have more details as we head closer to the event. Stay tuned for the full I/O 2024 coverage in May.
