Harmony OS for PC aims to build a deeply connected device ecosystem, that just works

Wouldn’t it be nice to just boot up your PC and seeing a seamless operating system that connects not just to your keyboard and monitor, but to your phone, your smartwatch, even your car? That’s the vision behind Huawei’s brand-new HarmonyOS PC, officially unveiled at the HarmonyOS Computer Technology and Ecosystem Communication Event.

There were 3, now there are 4

Zhu Dongdong, President of Huawei’s Tablet and PC Product Line, described it as “a new chapter” for the company. Built from the ground up, HarmonyOS for PCs isn’t just a repurposed mobile OS, which we have seen happen in a few cases in the past. It’s been reengineered from the kernel with three pillars, HarmonyOS Base, Ecosystem, and Experience.

Here’s what that actually means. The HarmonyOS Base includes a brand-new kernel, Huawei’s Ark Engine, StarShield architecture for deep security, and developer tools like ArkTS and ArkUI. On the Ecosystem front, there are now over 150 exclusive PC apps and over 2,000 universal apps, all optimised for cross-device collaboration and AI-enhanced workflows.

But the magic is in the Experience. HarmonyOS PC supports over 1,000 peripherals, from standard mice and keyboards to more obscure devices like scanners and drawing tablets. It’s a “plug in and just works” kind of promise.

Visually, the Ark Graphics Engine powers silky transitions, responsive windows, and even smart occlusion rendering. Lost your device? The built-in StarShield Security and Nearlink tech offer remote tracking, even when your PC is switched off.

It’s smart, it’s secure, and it’s deeply integrated.

With HarmonyOS now powering everything from wearables to in-car systems – which sounds exciting, but is actually heavily dependent on availability – and now PCs, Huawei is making one thing clear, this OS will be the center of a connected future, made in China.

And yes, it’s finally here.
