HMD’s new Ivalo XE phone is a rugged, modular beast you’d wish you could buy

HMD has a new phone that’ll sound really tempting for all the adventurers out there – except they’ll never be able to get their hands on it. Called the Ivalo XE, this ultra-rugged, super-secure device is built for high-stakes, mission-critical operations where security and reliability trump everything else.

Special specs all around

The reason why the Ivalo XE can’t be purchase is because HMD has specifically aimed it at government agencies, first responders, defence forces, and critical infrastructure sectors. It stands as one of the very few 5G devices that is designed, developed, and manufactured completely on European soil.

This approach guarantees a sovereign supply chain where critical components are sourced from trusted suppliers in allied nations, including the EU and US.

And as you can tell from its rugged look, the phone is built to withstand extreme operational environments, boasting certifications for IP68, IP69K, and MIL-STD-810H. To top it off, the screen is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2.

Security is where things get really serious. The device features dual-layer encryption, anti-tampering mechanisms, and a dedicated secure element. There’s even a physical hardware kill switch to instantly disable functions for peace of mind in sensitive situations.

Finally, we have a little detail that Nokia history buffs would appreciate. The name “Ivalo” is a actually a throwback since it was the original codename for the iconic Nokia N97 from 2009.
