Don’t run behind a microwave oven that doesn’t suit your needs

Home vs commercial use: Which microwave oven is best suited for you

Deciding on a perfect microwave oven is a difficult task. There are so many choices available in the market that it is almost paralysing. Let’s try to cast away your self-doubt and make your decision clear and easy for you. A few crucial pieces of information can make your buying decision a lot more hassle-free so that you pick the correct one for your specific needs.

What is a microwave oven?

Knowing your device will help you use it as it was intended. So, a microwave oven is an electrical appliance that uses microwaves to heat and cook food. These microwaves are a form of electromagnetic energy that cause water molecules in the food to vibrate and generate heat, cooking the food quickly and more importantly, evenly.

A microwave oven is quite similar to a convection microwave. The only difference between them is the advanced features and cooking options found in the convection microwave. Whereas a microwave oven is used primarily for heating, defrosting, and cooking simple dishes.

Home microwave ovens vs Commercial-use microwave ovens

Home-use microwave ovens are quite different from commercial-use microwave ovens in almost all aspects. From higher power output in commercial microwave ovens to a larger size, home-use microwave ovens are usually more compact versions of their commercially used counterparts.

These microwave ovens are made specifically to cater to the needs of limited people like small to medium families. So, if you are only going to use it in your home kitchen then home-use microwave ovens are ideal for you, while larger and powerful commercial microwave ovens would simply be overkill.

Types of microwave ovens for home use

There are several types of microwave ovens available. All of these perform specific tasks and differ from each other in a few crucial ways. There are primarily four broad categories and depending on your needs you can pick the one that suits your needs the best.

Countertop microwave oven: A countertop microwave oven is a compact option perfect for those who are looking for something and doesn’t take up much space. They are also an affordable option. As the name suggests, they can be placed on a kitchen counter and can be moved around if required; they do not require any special type of fitting space/placement. Due to their compact size, they are ideal for families with few people and smaller kitchens.

Over-the-range microwave oven: This is a good option for those who have a built-in kitchen. It saves counter space and can be installed above the stove. Thus, it doesn’t offer any specific feature, but it can be accommodated in a specific setup of built-in kitchens.

Built-in microwave ovens: These are some of the most expensive microwaves you will find, as these appliances are extremely personalised. Built-in microwave ovens are for those who want their kitchen setup to be specific, personal, and purposeful.

These are designed to be installed into a wall or cabinet, giving the oven a seamless look as if it was part of the kitchen’s overall aesthetic, rather than standing out as an appliance. This is why these are popular options for those looking to remodel their kitchens.

Convection microwave oven: If you want the flexibility of cooking in a variety of styles then getting a convection microwave oven will be ideal. If you want functions such as baking, grilling, roasting, and even browning and crisping food, similar to a traditional oven then you should go for a convection microwave oven. These offer more power and versatility for actual cooking compared to countertop microwave ovens.

Thus, if you are confused between a commercial microwave oven and a home-use microwave oven then only get a commercial microwave oven when you have a lot of use, your family is quite big, and you are going to get the use out of it. But in general, for almost everyone getting a home-use microwave oven would make more sense. And depending on the style of the kitchen, intended use, required functions, and the placement of the microwave oven itself, you can pick from the above four categories.
