The right way to start using your dishwasher from day one

How to operate a dishwasher for the first time: Easy guide

If you’ve just brought home a dishwasher for the first time, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what to do next. With all the buttons, cycles, and dos and don’ts, it’s natural to wonder if you’re using it correctly or risking a mistake.

But once it’s set up and running, a dishwasher can save time, clean more thoroughly than hand-washing, and even use less water in the long run. Here’s a simple guide on how to run your dishwasher the right way from the start.

How to operate a dishwasher for the first time

Unboxing a new dishwasher can feel oddly satisfying, but before you load it up and press start, there are a few simple things to set up first.

These early steps help your dishwasher clean better, run more efficiently, and avoid common issues like cloudy glasses or limescale buildup. Here’s what to do before using your dishwasher for the first time:

Step 1: Check your water hardness

Hard water can leave behind white spots and damage glassware over time. To help your dishwasher do its job properly, you need to find out how hard your tap water is.

Most dishwashers come with a water hardness test strip, usually included inside the manual or accessory pack. Dip it in tap water for one second, shake off the excess, and wait about a minute. The strip will change colour to show your water hardness level. Use the chart in the manual to match the result.

Step 2: Set the water softener

Once you know your water hardness, the next move is to adjust the dishwasher’s built-in softening system. This feature helps protect your dishes and internal parts from limescale. Check the manual for the hardness setting chart, then follow the instructions to adjust the dial or digital setting inside the machine. Setting this correctly ensures your dishwasher works efficiently from the start.

Step 3: Add dishwasher salt

To keep that softener running properly, you’ll need to add dishwasher salt, which basically allows the system to reduce mineral buildup during each cycle.

Start by opening the salt compartment, usually located at the base of the dishwasher. If this is the first time you’re filling it, add a bit of water first. Then pour in dishwasher salt using a funnel until the compartment is full and the water starts to overflow slightly. Close the cap tightly.

Step 4: Fill the rinse aid compartment

Rinse aid helps water slide off dishes more easily during the drying phase. It’s what prevents streaks and spots on your glasses. Open the rinse-aid compartment, often marked with a droplet icon, and pour in the liquid until it reaches the max line. Wipe away any spills with a cloth, then close the lid until it clicks shut.

Step 5: Add detergent

You can use powder or gel detergent, just don’t use regular dish soap. Use the markings inside the detergent compartment to measure the right amount based on how dirty the dishes are.

Step 6: Run a hot cycle

With everything filled and set, run one hot wash with the dishwasher empty. This rinses out any salt or residue left behind during setup and gets the system primed for everyday use.
Once that’s done, your dishwasher’s ready to take over the dirty work.

Once your dishwasher’s up and running, a few quick habits can go a long way. Firstly, there’s no need to pre-rinse as you can simply scrape off leftover food. Furthermore, load the dishes with enough space in between so the spray can reach them. Also, make sure to clean the filter once a month to avoid gunk buildup. Lastly, go easy on the detergent as too much does more harm than good. Stick to these basics and your dishwasher will stay in top shape.
