Huawei Mate 80 Pro launches globally with 50MP camera with variable aperture, enticing design

Back in November, Huawei unveiled the Mate 80, Mate 80 Pro, and Mate 80 Pro Max flagship series of smartphones in China. Now, the brand has officially announced the Mate 80 Pro for the global market. Here’s a look at everything packed inside Huawei’s latest flagship.

Huawei Mate 80 Pro: Specs and features

Starting with the design, the Huawei Mate 80 Pro looks enticing as it flaunts a ‘Dual Space Rings’ design on the back. At the top, there is a circular camera module, while the bottom ring is purely aesthetic and houses a round coil for wireless charging underneath.

On the front, the Mate 80 Pro features a 6.75-inch flat OLED display that offers a 1.5K resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, 1440Hz PWM dimming, and a peak brightness of 3000 nits. It is one of the few non-Apple phones to support 3D facial recognition. It also includes a side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

The screen is protected by second-generation Kunlun Glass, and the device comes with IP68/69-rated dust and water resistance.

The official page does not reveal details about the Mate 80 Pro’s chipset. In China, the device is available in Kirin 9030 and 9030 Pro variants, and it is likely that one of these powers the global version. It ships with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of internal storage.

Moving to the camera department, the Mate 80 Pro’s rear setup includes an OIS-enabled 50MP main camera with f/1.4 to f/4.0 variable aperture support. It is accompanied by a 50MP ultra-wide lens, a 48MP macro telephoto lens with support for 4x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom, and a second-generation colour-sensing camera to enhance colour accuracy.

On the front, there is an autofocus-enabled 13MP camera for selfies and video calls. Huawei’s XMAGE imaging engine handles image processing, optimising colours, contrast, and dynamic range for improved overall photo quality.

The Mate 80 Pro does not come with Google apps and services, but it runs on the company’s own HarmonyOS. It features a 5,750mAh battery that supports 100W wired charging, 80W wireless charging, 18W reverse wired charging, and 20W reverse wireless charging.

Other features include an IR blaster, NFC, a laser sensor, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 6.0, and a USB-C (Gen 3.2) port.

Huawei Mate 80 Pro: Price and availability

Huawei has not confirmed the Mate 80 Pro’s pricing, but it is expected to be available in select markets in shades such as Black, Green, and Gold. While there are unconfirmed reports that Huawei may re-enter the Indian market in the future, the Mate 80 Pro is unlikely to make it to India.
