5 iPhone 17 features that make it a worthy upgrade

Apple finally took the wraps off the iPhone 17 lineup at the Awe Dropping event in California. The series comprises three models this time, dubbed the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The lineup has several standout features, like improved cameras and performance, but here are five of the key features that make it a worthy upgrade.

120Hz ProMotion

While this may not seem like a big deal, it’s surely an upgrade for the vanilla iPhone users. The iPhone 17 is the first base iPhone to get ProMotion, enabling that smooth 120Hz refresh rate. And the great news is that it supports LTPO technology, which means it can switch to different refresh rates. Varying refresh rate lets the phone offer extra battery life.

For the Pros, the brightness of the screen has been improved to 3,000 nits, offering better sunlight legibility.

8x telephoto zoom

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max take things up a notch by offering an 8x telephoto camera. While the main optical zoom capability is 4x, as opposed to 5x on the 16 Pro lineup, in-sensor zoom can push it to 8x with near optical quality, thanks to the new 48MP telephoto camera.

Zoom isn’t the only thing; Apple has also ported the Center Stage feature from Mac to iPhones. The feature ensures you always stay within the frame. Also, the camera sensor this time is square, which means you can make the shot landscape or portrait, without physically changing the orientation of the phone.

A19 performance

Apple’s A18 lineup of chips was way too powerful, and the A19 takes things further. The iPhone 17 gets the vanilla A19 chipset with a 5-core GPU, whereas the Pro models get the most powerful A19 Pro, which has a 6-core GPU. These chips are incredibly powerful, even more than some of Apple’s M series chips that are reserved for the Macs and iPads.

Improved thermals

Great performance comes at a cost and that’s often the heat generated, resulting in bad thermals. Thankfully, the iPhone 17 Pros have a dedicated vapour chamber cooling solution inside that ensures that thermals are in check. So, be it gaming or prolonged usage, iPhone 17 Pros may not turn into a heater of sorts.

Best battery life yet

All iPhones pack larger batteries, which results in a longer screentime. The iPhone 17 is promised to deliver up to 30 hours of video playback, as opposed to 22 hours on the iPhone 16. The 16 Pro can offer 33 hours of video playback, which is six hours of extra usage.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max has the biggest battery of all iPhones, which results in up to 39 hours of advertised video playback. For comparison, the iPhone 16 Pro Max can offer just 33 hours of video playback.

The improved screen, upgraded cameras, A19 performance, a dedicated cooling system, and the improved battery life make the iPhone 17 series a worthy upgrade.
