AI arms race intensifies

Meta inks a multi-year deal with AMD for 6GW GPUs for AI infrastructure

AI development and usage requires massive computing power and energy which makes access to advanced chips and data centers critical. Now, social media giant Meta has joined hands with chipmaker AMD to power its artificial intelligence infrastructure. This is a significant multi-year agreement and is beneficial for both companies.

AMD to supply 6W GPUs to Meta

As a part of the deal, AMD will be supplying 6 gigawatts worth of Instinct GPUs and EPYC CPUs to Meta. This is the silicon computing technology designed to power next-generation AI models. The Taiwanese chipmaker will start with 1GW of its forthcoming MI450 hardware in the second half of this year.

Meta will also be working with AMD to tighten its roadmap alignment across silicon, systems, and software to optimise performance per watt for Meta’s AI workloads. Under the deal, AMD has issued performance-based warrant for up to 160 million shares to Meta which is about 10 percent of the company.

For AMD, this partnership is a strategic win as it has been overshadowed by Nvidia in GPU supply while Meta is reducing its reliance on single supplier to support its AI expansion ambitions.

The Taiwanese chipmaker entered a similar partnership with OpenAI last October. Meanwhile, Meta also doubled down on its agreement with Nvidia expanding a multi-year AI infrastructure pact to secure millions of Nvidia GPUs.
