Minecraft isn’t slowing down as 2025 comes to a close. Mojang’s final drop of the year, revealed during the September Minecraft Live, is called Mounts of Mayhem. It promises to turn battles into something you’d expect from a fantasy film rather than a sandbox survival game. Here’s everything you need to know about the Mounts of Mayhem Minecraft update.
Minecraft combat reimagined
The big headliner is the Spear, a brand-new weapon tier that does more than just expand your arsenal. Crafted from two sticks and an ingot of Iron, Gold, or Diamond, the Spear comes with two fighting modes. First, a short, snappy Jab and second, a devastating Charge attack that scales with your speed.
But there’s nuance here. Hold on to it too long and it starts to feel heavier, making your swings slower and less effective. Diamond Spears pack the biggest punch but tire you out the fastest, while Gold and Iron versions trade raw power for staying power.
Where the Spear really comes alive is in mounted combat. Mojang is introducing full-on jousting mechanics, letting players clash while riding horses, soaring on Ghasts, or even diving underwater with the help of the new Nautilus mob. A successful charge doesn’t just deal damage; it can knock back enemies or even throw them off their mounts.
The Spear cycles through three distinct states. At its peak, it can deal damage, knock back foes, and dismount them. Once it starts to shake, it still hits hard but loses the dismount effect. And when it begins to fall, it becomes a blunt instrument.

The result is chaotic, theatrical combat that forces players to read the moment. Imagine storming a Pillager Outpost with an Elytra dive or chasing down a zombie cavalry squad across the plains.
Beyond the battlefield
The new Nautilus mob is making a splash as an underwater companion and opponent, opening up aquatic jousts and deep-sea skirmishes. Combined with the Spear’s mechanics, it’s clear Mojang is nudging players toward experimentation.
So, when the Mounts of Mayhem update drops later this year, don’t expect quiet nights of mining and crafting. Expect chaos, spectacle, and a few glorious wipeouts. The update is expected to drop in December 2025, but the final date still remains a mystery. Are you excited to try out the new combat? Drop a comment with your thoughts.
