OpenAI’s GPT-5 LLM may launch sooner than you think

Generative artificial intelligence today has penetrated all walks of life – whether it is automation in industries, supply chain management, academics in school and college, or even content creation – whether in the form of text, images, or videos.

Arguably, OpenAI’s ChatGPT was a catalyst for this, since its launch in November 2022. Since then, it has also evolved at a rapid pace, getting more and more functionalities such as the generation of images using a DALL-E integration, the ability to remember your preferences and frequently asked questions via GPT-4, and more.

And now, OpenAI is likely to unveil its next big offering to us. Namely, the GPT-5 model. Read on to find out more.

GPT-5: What’s known so far

Rumour has it, that GPT-5 will be exponentially more powerful than GPT-4, being trained anywhere on anywhere between three-to-five times the number of parameters on the latter, which stands at approximately 1.7 trillion.

The model, according to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, will be “materially better than GPT-4.” Altman also mentions that the new model will be released this year. However, he didn’t mention the name “GPT-5” or a launch timeline.

This suggests that the upcoming model is still under testing, under the red-teaming phase. Red teaming refers to testing a Large Language Model (LLM) for any potential red flags around ethics and safety.

Another thing to remember is that before GPT-4 was released, users were given access to GPT 3.5 as a follow up to GPT-3. This also suggests that OpenAI could potentially be working on a smaller release in the form of GPT-4.5, before actually releasing GPT-5.

Things to keep an eye out for in the AI space

A lot has been happening in the generative AI space for the past couple of months. All eyes have lately been on Sora, a platform that can generate realistic videos of up to one minute using nothing but textual prompts on your laptops and desktops.

Google rebranded Bard to Gemini and also updated it to be powered by the LLM of the same name. Anthropic recently unveiled Claude 3 Opus as well. In such a scenario, it will be interesting to see how ChatGPT fares, and if it will remain as dominant in the space as it has been for so long,
