Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor review

A step up in immersion, for your gaming setup

Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor review

Monitors today come in all shapes and sizes. There are smaller, compact monitors that you can carry around as a second screen for your laptop, and then there are monitors like the one you see above – something that looks it comes straight from a Sci-Fi movie.

This is the Samsung Odyssey G9 – 49-inches of curved, high-resolution screen, designed to wrap around your field of view and make you immerse in games in a way you haven’t before. However, the price for this immersion is equally steep. So, does the Odyssey G9 make any sense for your gaming setup? Find out in our full review below.

Samsung Odyssey G9: Display

The most captivating aspect of the Samsung Odyssey G9 is the display, and to cut things short, it’s nothing short of brilliant. Samsung also makes smaller curved ultrawide monitors with the super wide 32:9 aspect ratio, but using one at this size is just special. That’s because the size helps dial up the immersion factor to 11.

We played games like FIFA 23, Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Forza Horizon 5 on the monitor and the experience was supreme. Be it the ability to see the entire football pitch in FIFA, a cockpit spanning across both rear-view mirrors in Forza Horizon 5 or simply seeing the entire New York skyline at once in Spider-Man, games that you’ve already played feel completely different on this monitor.

The 1000R curvature is also just the right amount for a centrally positioned gamer to every inch of the monitor at the right angle. Unlike gaming on a big TV, this means no reflections or viewing angle discrepancies towards the corners. How you see the middle of the screen, is how you see the edges.

When you’re not gaming, the Samsung Odyssey G9 is also a great productivity monitor, allowing you to stack multiple windows side-by-side or even vertically.

The Samsung Odyssey G9 also comes with 240Hz refresh rate

The Samsung Odyssey G9 also comes with a fairly bright display and good colour reproduction. For those who like some more tuning though, the built-in control panel that can be accessed with the center-aligned buttons on the bottom offer a lot of settings to tweak. There’s also 240Hz refresh rate, which is great for first person games where every frame counts, but also means most newer titles will feel super smooth to play.

Samsung also sells an OLED version of this monitor for those who want deeper contrast levels, so if you can stretch your budget a little further, that’s something you may want to consider.

Samsung Odyssey G9: Features and connectivity

The display panel on the Odyssey G9 is easily its trump card, but that’s not all you get on this behemoth of a monitor. Also included are plenty of features, from aesthetic additions to useful productivity options.

The InfinityCore Lighting on the back panel, for instance, is a nice touch for the rear side of the monitor. It will turn heads at the office, but even if you have a wall behind the panel, this light can throw a nice glow on it.

Other useful features include a cable management strap that helps keep all your wires clean, as well as a Picture-in-Picture mode (PiP) that lets you connect two devices at once and use them together, turning the Odyssey G9 into a dual-monitor setup when you want to.

This brings us to the connectivity aspect of the Samsung Odyssey G9. The monitor comes with multiple HDMI ports and even DisplayPort connectivity, which allows for simultaneous connections with laptops, desktops and even consoles. You can basically connect your Sony PlayStation 5 and your work laptop to this monitor, and have them both running side-by-side in a 16:9 aspect ratio at once! That’s the magic of an ultrawide-monitor that offers PiP features.

Unboxed Take: Who should get the Samsung Odyssey G9?

The Samsung Odyssey G9 is a great monitor for what it offers, but we still cannot recommend it to everyone. At Rs 1,28,124 at the time of writing this review, it is certainly expensive. It’s also so wide, most gaming setups may require a larger desk to accommodate this monitor (unless you have mounting options to back you up).

One also needs to understand that not all setups and games will support this resolution. The Sony PS5, for instance does not support the 32:9 resolution, making this monitor overkill if you plan on using it with a console.

While gaming laptops and desktops do support this resolution, your configurations will also come into play, since you will need a fairly powerful GPU to make the most of this setup. Unless you have these prerequisites, any ultrawide monitor, may not be for you.

However, if you do have a capable PC, a library of games to make the most of this aspect ratio, and the budget to splurge on an expensive monitor, the Samsung Odyssey G9 is simply one of the best components you can add to your gaming setup, and will make returning to regular monitors feel like a step down.

For this reason, we rate the Odyssey G9 4/5 stars, and yes, if you’re looking to give your gaming setup an ultrawide-sized upgrade, you should definitely look into this monitor.
