Fourth Unpacked event reportedly on the cards

Samsung has a wild new tri-screen phone that could land this month

Samsung is reportedly planning a surprise fourth Unpacked event for September 29 in South Korea, and the headliner is tipped to be its dual-hinged Galaxy Z TriFold phone. As if this isn’t enough, the leaks suggest the showcase will also feature the debut of Samsung’s mixed-reality headset, codenamed Project Moohan, and a first look at new AI-powered “Galaxy Glasses”.

The Galaxy Z TriFold might arrive sooner than anyone expected

The move points to a jam-packed end of the year for Samsung as it prepares to drop some of its most ambitious hardware yet, well after its typical summer foldable launch. The news was dropped by IceUniverse.

The phone itself, which could also be called the Galaxy G Fold, isn’t technically a “tri-fold”. It uses two hinges to unfold into a massive 10-inch OLED tablet, with a 6.49-inch external display for when it’s closed. This new form factor is expected to be a seriously niche and expensive piece of kit.

Rumours point to a price tag floating around the 4 million KRW mark, which translates to an eye-watering Rs 2.5 lakhs. The camera setup sounds familiar, with a rumoured 200-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel ultrawide, and a 10-megapixel telephoto lens.

Samsung appears to be treading carefully with this one. Supply chain reports, as highlighted by ETNews, indicate the company is only producing around 50,000 units for its initial run. That’s a tiny number and suggests this is a trial run to gauge interest.

To further limit the risk, the device will reportedly only be sold in South Korea and China, so global fans will have to sit this one out for now. A commercial rollout is expected around November.

Joining the foldable on stage will be the Project Moohan headset, which might be officially named the Galaxy XR. It’s expected to be priced at around Rs 1.7 lakhs and should see a wider global release after its initial Korean launch on October 13.
