Samsung’s Hearapy app launched to ease motion sickness while traveling

Samsung has quietly announced a Hearapy app aimed to help people with motion sickness. In an announcement blog post, the South Korean brand says that almost a third of all people have this condition. The company is combining its Galaxy Buds4 Pro with the companion app to deliver a comfortable travel experience to users who experience nausea on flights, road trips, and sea. 

Samsung introduces Hearapy app

Samsung says that the idea came from a study from Nagoya University in Japan, where researchers found which tone stimulates the vestibular system.

For those unaware, motion sickness is a condition that occurs due to a mismatch in signals about movement coming from different parts of your body, for example, while travelling, moving objects signal your brain that you’re moving, but other body parts signal that you’re sitting still. 

Samsung’s approach with the Hearapy app attempts to reduce sensory conflict with audio-based cues. The app plays a 100Hz sine wave tone at a volume of 75db to 85dB. This is said to stimulate the balance system in your inner ears.

The company also claims that listening to this sound for a minute can temporarily rid you of motion sickness for up to 2 hours. It’s worth noting that no external sound, like music or noise, must interfere with the sine wave.

It’s likely that the Hearapy app is perfectly tuned for the Galaxy Buds4 Pro, but it also works with earphones and even headphones from different brands as long as the drivers support 100Hz frequency. The app can also be downloaded on other smartphones from the Google Play Store.
