Move over, big rigs! The future of cinematic storytelling just got way sleeker. Sony has just dropped the FX2 Cinema Camera (ILME-FX2), and it’s already poised to become the go-to tool for indie filmmakers, solo shooters, and agile production crews.
Packing a 33MP back-illuminated Exmor R full-frame sensor into a body that weighs less than a MacBook Air (just 679g), the FX2 is proof that big things can come in compact packages.
The headline feature? A jaw-dropping 15+ stops of dynamic range with S-Log3. This aims to give filmmakers the creative freedom to master shadows and highlights like never before.
Sony FX2 cinema camera: Everything you need to know
At first glance, the FX2 might look familiar. Borrowing design cues from the FX3 and FX30, it’s all about ergonomics and portability. But this is no mere remix. Sony has fine-tuned the formula with smarter heat management, thanks to an internal fan and advanced dissipation systems. So, you can roll continuous 4K 60p footage for up to 13 hours!
You can easily rig it up for a custom shoot, too. The FX2 features three built-in mounting points, plus an optional handle for expanded control and audio capabilities. It’s tailor-made for guerrilla filmmakers, travel shooters, or anyone who needs power without the bulk.
The sensor’s dual-base ISO of 800/4000 and a maximum ISO of 102400 mean you’ll get exceptional low-light performance, capturing mood and atmosphere without noise getting in the way.
Pair that with 4:2:2 10-bit All-Intra recording, XAVC SI DCI 4K at 24p, and a full suite of colour management tools – including S-Cinetone, 16 custom LUTs, and multiple log shooting modes – and you’ve got a creative powerhouse that’s as comfortable in post as it is on set. The FX2 also supports 1.3x and 2.0x desqueeze for that classic cinematic look.

Sony’s Real-Time Autofocus is so advanced, it can track everything from human eyes to birds, insects, and even vehicles. Plus, with AF Assist, focus breathing compensation, and customisable transition speeds, your focus pulls will feel as natural as your storytelling.
The FX2 also features Active and Dynamic Active stabilisation modes, plus Framing Stabiliser tech for tripod-mounted shots, keeping things smooth no matter how you move.
The upgraded 3.68-million-dot tilting EVF and 3.0-inch variable-angle LCD mean you can frame shots precisely, whether you’re shooting eye-level interviews or low-angle action. The interface even rotates automatically for vertical shooting, which is perfect for social media-ready content without sacrificing quality.
The FX2’s Log Shooting mode also lets you snap 33MP photos with cinematic colour science. With the MOVIE/STILL mode lever, switching between high-quality video and stunning stills is just a flick away.

The optional handle kit includes two XLR/TRS ports and a 3.5mm mic input, delivering 4-channel 24-bit audio for pro-grade sound. Connectivity-wise, it’s stacked – HDMI Type-A (with RAW output), USB-C (10 Gbps), dual-band Wi-Fi, and even LAN via adapter. And for live streaming? The FX2 supports both USB and network streaming, making it ready for content creators looking to go live in high fidelity.
Sony FX2 cinema camera: Pricing and release
The Sony FX2 will be available starting July 2025, priced at €3,199 (approximately Rs 3,07,700) for the body only and €3,699 (approximately Rs 3,55,800) with handle kit. But for a tool that punches this far above its weight, it’s an investment that pays off in versatility, performance, and pure creative potential.
