What is alkaline water purifier and is it safe for me?

If you’ve heard about alkaline water filters, either from friends, neighbours or other customers at the electronics store, you are not alone. Alkaline water filters are quickly growing to be popular among users and for good reason. However, if you’re new to the tech, don’t worry. Today we’ll help you understand how alkaline water purifiers work and what benefits alkaline water can offer for your body.

The need for treating acidic water

While normal water purifiers do a good job of filtering your water and removing any pollutants from it, it may still leave tap water in its usual acidic state. With lower pH levels, acidic water is comparatively harder for the body to absorb and doesn’t really offer the body any health-related benefits.

What is an alkaline water purifier and how does it work?

As the name suggests, an alkaline water purifier filters your water, while also treating it to balance its pH levels. For safe drinking, the ideal pH of water should be between 6.5 and 8.5. However, water with a pH level below 7 is considered acidic. An alkaline water purifier neutralises water with low pH levels to make it better for consumption.

When water is treated with an alkaline water purifier, the output is usually water with a pH level between 8 and 9. Studies have shown that this slightly alkaline water may benefit some users suffering from conditions like acid reflux, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes.

That sums up the two main functions of an alkaline water purifier – filtering any unwanted impurities from water and neutralising its acidic content, which the purifier does by adding minerals that are usually lost in the filtering process. These minerals include potassium, magnesium and calcium.

Is alkaline water safe to drink?

Water that has a pH below 6.5 or higher than the recommended 8.5 is not exactly unsafe. However, the studies we mentioned above have shown that altering the pH of the water to make it a little alkaline can have some health benefits for users. This means not only is slightly alkaline water safe but it is also considered healthy by many.

To determine if you should be using an alkaline water purifier, you can do a self-test at home with your primary source of water, which will be tap water for most people. Simply get a water pH testing kit, which you can find online or at medical shops, and follow the instructions to run a quick and easy test. If you find that the water supplied to your home is a little on the acidic side, you may want to consider investing in an alkaline water purifier.
