USB debugging is a feature present on all Android devices that allows a computer to access advanced features and diagnostics on your Android smartphone or tablet. While not a hidden feature or difficult to access, USB debugging often requires the use of specialised apps. This mode is primarily for developers and power users who know what they’re doing and need additional information and access when designing apps and other services.
Use-cases for USB debugging
USB debugging is particularly useful if you’re a developer, as you can install and test apps while gathering live feedback from the device. With the right tools, like Android Studio, you gain access to a lot more technical data that can help with the design and refinement of your app.
Power users are another category who will enjoy USB debugging. In this mode, you can install custom ROMs — custom Android variants that add new features and functionality — or use advanced data recovery features. It’s also useful for troubleshooting various issues that would not normally be resolvable via the regular smartphone interface.
How to enable USB debugging
To enable USB debugging, you will first need to enable Developer Options. This can be done by going to Settings>About Phone and then scrolling down to Build Number and tapping it several times till you see a message saying that the mode is enabled, or something to that effect.
Then go to Settings>Developer Options>USB Debugging and set the toggle to On.
Be warned that enabling USB debugging and connecting the phone to an unsecure computer can open your phone up to malicious attacks. Do not use this mode unless you’re fully aware of what the implications are. You can even wreck your Android install yourself without realising.
