What should I look for when buying a new TV in 2026?

I miss the old days of buying a new TV. You walked into a store, selected the screen size based on your budget from your preferred brand. That’s it.

Today, you need to take into consideration the resolution, panel type, smart TV platform, and port selection to name a few. It can be a lot and can get confusing real quick. If you find yourself in a similar situation then you are not alone. Without overwhelming you, here’s what you should look for when buying a new TV in 2026.

7 things to look for when buying a new TV

The big advantage of buying a new TV in 2026 is how varied the market has become. You are not just buying a TV that allows you to watch your news or TV serials, but one that lets you stream global content, catch up on world sports, and play games.

Here are seven things to look for when buying a new TV in 2026:

1. Size
2. Display Panel
3. Screen Resolution
4. Smart TV features
5. Ports/Connectivity
6. Gaming performance
7. Price

1. Size

Size is one of the most important things to consider before buying a new TV and this is where Indian consumers make their first mistake. To understand the right screen size for your home, you need to first measure your viewing distance.

The general rule is the screen’s diagonal in inches should be roughly half your viewing distance in inches. Sitting eight feet away? A 48 to 55-inch screen size is right for you. 10 feet away? Choose a 55 to 65-inch panel. The bigger the screen, the further away you should be because sitting closer to a large screen can introduce visible pixel structure and cause fatigue.

2. Display Panel

Once you figure out the right screen size, the panel type is the next consequential choice you need to make. The decision depends on where the TV lives, how bright you want it to be, and the backlight solution.

OLED: This is the gold standard for picture quality because each pixel produces its own light and can switch off completely. This results in deeper blacks, exceptional contrast, accurate colours, and wider viewing angle.

QLED and Mini-LED: These are LED-backlit alternatives that solve OLED’s brightness problem. These panels use quantum dot technology and reach peak brightness that leads to comfortable viewing through direct sunlight. Their contrast is not as precise as OLED but Mini-LED panels with local dimming zones tend to fare better. Look for Dolby Vision for HDR and if HDR10+, it’s a bonus.

3. Screen Resolution

4K is the only sensible choice when it comes to screen resolution in 2026. Yes, there are 8K TVs but there is not a lot of native 8K content available and upscaling doesn’t justify the premium price. Instead of 8K TV, choose a well-engineered 4K panel with high peak brightness, HDR support, and good upscaling.

4. Smart TV features

In 2026, the operating system on your TV matters as much as the panel quality or screen resolution. Google TV remains the strongest smart TV platform, but Samsung and LG have their own Tizen and webOS platforms respectively.

They all have an intuitive user interface, comprehensive app library, and receive regular software updates. While you can use streaming devices like Apple TV 4K or Fire TV 4K, Xiaomi has started selling smart TVs with Fire TV built-in.

5. Ports/Connectivity

Before buying a new TV in 2026, you must check the number of available ports. You will need a minimum of three HDMI ports, including one for a streaming device or soundbar, one for a set-top box, and one spare.

Verify if one of those HDMI ports supports eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel). You should also look for multiple USB ports and avoid one port above another if possible. It is also important to look for Bluetooth 5.0 or higher, Wi-Fi, ethernet, and optical output for audio.

6. Gaming performance

If you own or plan to own a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or a high-end gaming PC, you must look at gaming performance as well. It all begins with HDMI 2.1, a non-negotiable port supporting 4K at 120Hz, variable refresh rate, and auto low latency mode, responsible for smoother and more responsive gameplay. You should also ensure that your TV supports high refresh rate natively and if possible, check for input lag as well.

7. Price

If your budget is below Rs 30,000, you should consider a 43-inch LED while extending your budget to Rs 50,000 will let you buy a 55-inch QLED or QD-Mini LED 4K Smart TV. For a budget around Rs 1,00,000, you can consider OLED or premium Mini-LED performance TVs while a budget above Rs 2,00,000 puts you in the territory of Samsung S95F, one of the best 4K TV money can buy right now. While above Rs 5,00,000, you can get 8K TVs, the premium is hard to justify.

The bottom line is that there is no single TV that can meet the appetite of every Indian consumer. For most Indian households, a 43-inch or 55-inch 4K panel would be a much better fit than larger TV panels. Once you settle on the screen size and resolution, it is worth spending on TV features like Dolby Vision, smart TV OS platforms such as Google TV, at least one HDMI 2.1 port, and everything else is a bonus.
