Xiaomi 17 Ultra may drop rear display for large camera module

Rumours suggest that Xiaomi may unveil the Xiaomi 17 Ultra earlier than expected, possibly by the end of this year, ahead of its usual release schedule. A new leak, courtesy of tipster Digital Chat Station, has revealed notable upgrades for the 17 Ultra, along with design details suggesting it will differ from other Xiaomi 17 Pro series models.

According to the latest leak, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5-powered Xiaomi 17 Ultra could deliver a notable leap in imaging capabilities. The tipster previously claimed that it will feature a 50MP + 50MP + 50MP + 200MP quad-camera system.

As per the new leak, it will feature an upgraded main camera with a large 50MP sensor designed to improve clarity, zoom, and overall image detail. This primary shooter is expected to work hand-in-hand with a new 200MP periscope telephoto camera, enabling smooth, lossless zoom across various focal lengths.

The telephoto lens may also support macro photography at longer distances, giving users more flexibility when capturing small subjects. On top of that, both the wide and telephoto cameras are said to offer a wider dynamic range, which should help the device produce better results in challenging lighting conditions.

The tipster also revealed that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra will have a round camera module, giving it a professional camera-like look, meaning its rear design could be different from its siblings, such as the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max. With a large circular camera occupying a major space on the back panel, the device may not feature a rear display like the other Xiaomi 17 series models.

The rumour mill has already leaked Xiaomi 17 Ultra’s camera specifications in the past. As per reports, it will have an OmniVision OV50X 50MP primary camera, a pair of Samsung JN5 50MP cameras for ultra-wide and telephoto shots, and a 200MP Samsung HPE periscope telephoto camera. For selfies, it may feature a 50MP OV50MP camera on the front.

There are speculations that the Xiaomi 17 Ultra may arrive in two versions. While both models are said to pack the same set of cameras, the higher-end edition could be equipped with innovative and disruptive photography features.
