New feature detects early hypertension

Apple brings breakthrough hypertension monitoring feature in India

Tracking high blood pressure, which is medically known as hypertension, is very important, especially in India. This ‘silent killer’ has increasingly been the cause of heart attacks and strokes in young adults (under 50) without any warning symptoms. Regular monitoring is the only way to detect it early, and if you own an Apple Watch, you can now track it through the all-new hypertension notification system that Apple has introduced in India.

The feature quietly reviews heart-related signals over an extended period and alerts users if it detects trends that may require medical attention. Apple says the system is backed by wide clinical research and has the potential to surface many previously unrecognised cases.

How Apple’s hypertension notification feature works

The hypertension notification system relies on the optical heart sensor to study how blood vessels respond with each heartbeat. The algorithm runs in the background and examines 30 days of data to determine whether the Watch is consistently picking up indicators tied to chronic high blood pressure.

When such a pattern is found, users receive an alert in the Health app, along with guidance recommending them to record their blood pressure with a third-party cuff for seven days and share the log with a healthcare provider. Apple emphasises that this feature is not a diagnostic tool but an early warning mechanism that encourages timely evaluation.

Eligible devices and prerequisites

The feature is supported on Apple Watch Series 9 or later and Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, paired with an iPhone 11 or newer.

Wrist Detection must be enabled, and the user needs to be at least 22 years old, not pregnant, and should not have a previous hypertension diagnosis.

Steps to use the feature

Here are the steps on how to use hypertension notification feature:

Step 1: Open the Apple Health app on your iPhone.
Step 2: Tap your profile icon and select Health Checklist.
Step 3: Choose Hypertension Notifications.
Step 4: Confirm your details and follow the onscreen instructions to complete setup.

What to do if you receive a notification

When a hypertension alert appears, the Watch directs the user to create a Blood Pressure Log in the Health app. Because the Watch cannot measure blood pressure directly, readings must be taken using a third-party cuff. After each measurement, systolic and diastolic values can be added manually to help build a complete log for medical review.
